Method
 

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add shortening or lard and mix until crumbly.
  3. Slowly pour in warm water and knead the dough until smooth and soft (about 5 minutes).
  4. Let the dough rest, covered, for 10 minutes.
  5. Divide into 8 equal balls. Flatten each with a rolling pin into a thick round (not too thin).
  6. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each tortilla for about 2–3 minutes per side, until light brown spots form.
  7. Keep warm by wrapping in a towel until ready to serve.
